Mr Monkey's Island. Learning Tips

Tips

Take the learning process slowly, it is not a race to learn all tables as quickly as possible.

In the learning zone games, encourage children to read the sums aloud as they appear.

Start with 1, 2, 10, 5, 11, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and just learn the first five sums of a value first.

Once a child is comfortable with their knowledge of a set, then try a practice game for just that number, banana drop will be the best one, try the set over and over until the child is happy that the set is memorized.

This order will vary for some children as they find it easier to multiply even numbers, and some children may want to move onto 12 which is an easy step after learning 10 and 2. However, because the values are that much higher it can be daunting.

Pay special attention to the square numbers.

1x1=1
2x2=4
3x3=9
4x4=16
Etc

Remember to make sure your child knows the similarities in the multiplication facts, if they know what 5x9 is, then they also know what 9x5 is.

In the whole of the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables there are only 36 different numbers. So out of 96 answers, 60 are repeats. Out of these same sums, by the time you get to the 9x table, there is only one unique number to memorize. (9x9=81)

----------------

6 times table

To times something by 6 i.e. 8x6 is the same as half of 8 x10 (40) + 8

8x6=48

So 9x6 would be, half of 90, 45+9=64

----------------

9 times table

This has several patterns, here are a few –

the answers, when the two digits are added together always add up to 9. ie. 63 (6+3=9) , 72 (7+2=9) this is particularly useful to know as you quickly reduce the facts to learn.

27 and 72 are both facts from the nines
36 and 63
45 and 54 etc

- Add 1 to the tens, take 1 away from the units:

18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72,

- If you have already learned your tens, then 9 x something is the same as 10x that number minus the number itself, so,.

7 x 9 is

70 minus 7

That also works for big numbers, 500x9= 5000 - 500 (4500)

- Hold up both hands - each finger is numbered 1 to 10. To find out 3 x 9, put down your third finger. Count the fingers before the one you have put down (2) and count the fingers after the one you have put down (7)

3x9=27

--------------

10 times table

just add a zero to the end, so 9x10 = 90

----------------

11 times table

Each number to ten is duplicated, after that, add the two numbers together and put the answer in between, so

12x11= (1+2 is 3) So 12x11= 132

This will work for bigger numbers too - 63x11= (6+3 is 9) So 63x11= 693

If your middle number is higher than ten, you must add the extra ten to the first column and the units go in the middle.

75x11= (7+5 is 12) So 75x11= 8 2 4
